Pneumatic Strapping Tool Won't Weld PET Strap? 5 Reasons & Fixes

Introduction

You squeeze the trigger, the heater works, but the PET strap won't fuse together. Either there's no bond at all, or the weld breaks as soon as tension is applied.

This is a common problem with heat seal pneumatic strapping tools (also called friction weld or heat seal strappers). Here are the real reasons and how to fix them.

1. Welding temperature is too low

PET strap requires a specific temperature range to melt and fuse. If the heater isn't hot enough, the strap surfaces won't bond.

Fix: Increase the temperature setting in small increments (5–10°C). Test on a scrap piece of strap. The weld should show melted fibers across the entire joint, not just on the surface.

2. Weld time (heating duration) too short

Even at the right temperature, the strap needs enough time to melt through its thickness. Too short a weld time results in a weak surface bond that peels apart.

Fix: Increase weld time by 0.3–0.5 seconds. On most pneumatic tools, this is adjusted with a dial or screw. Watch the weld – it should turn slightly glossy but not burn.

3. Cooling time (hold time) insufficient

After the heater stops, the molten PET needs to cool under pressure. If you release too early, the weld will pull apart or spring open.

Fix: Increase cooling/hold time by 0.5–1 second. The strap should feel firm and cool to the touch before releasing tension.

4. Dirty or worn heater plate / anvil

PET residue builds up on the heater plate or anvil over time. This creates uneven heat transfer and prevents proper fusion.

Fix: Clean the heater plate and anvil with a brass brush or fine sandpaper (machine OFF and cooled). Do not use oil or grease – it will contaminate the weld.

5. Poor strap quality or contamination

PET strap that is old, wet, oily, or made from recycled/low-grade material often won't fuse properly even with correct settings.

Fix: Test with a fresh, clean, dry piece of high-quality PET strap from a different roll. If that welds correctly, the problem is the strap – not the tool.

Quick Test

Make a weld. Let it cool completely (10 seconds). Pull by hand.

  • If the strap pulls apart cleanly with no melted fibers → temperature too low or time too short
  • If the weld is black or brittle → temperature too high
  • If only the top layer melted → time too short or dirty heater plate

FAQ

Q: Why won't my pneumatic strapping tool weld PET strap?

A: The most common reasons are: welding temperature too low, weld time too short, insufficient cooling time, a dirty heater plate/anvil, or poor quality/contaminated PET strap.

Q: How do I fix a PET strap that won't fuse?

A: Start by cleaning the heater plate with a brass brush. Then increase temperature in small steps. If that doesn't work, increase weld time and cooling time. Finally, test with a different roll of PET strap to rule out material issues.

Q: What is the correct weld temperature for PET strap?

A: Typical welding temperature for PET strap is between 210°C and 250°C (410–480°F). However, always follow your tool manufacturer's recommendation and adjust based on strap thickness and quality.
