Safe Steel Strapping Removal: Essential Guidelines for Industrial & Shipping Workplaces

Steel strapping is one of the most reliable methods for binding or reinforcing wooden crates and other boxes that contain heavy objects. It is also widely used for securing highway signs during transport.

However, once these items reach their final destination, someone has to remove the steel banding. At this moment, metal straps can become dangerous weapons that lash out when the bands are cut and the tension is released.

To help protect workers and bystanders, follow these 6 essential safety rules when cutting steel strapping.

1. Wear Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Before cutting any steel strap, make sure you are wearing:

• Safety glasses (to protect your eyes from flying ends)
  
• Hard hat (to guard against head injuries)
  
• Safety shoes (to protect your feet)
  
• Long pants and a long-sleeved shirt (to protect your arms and legs from blows)

2. Keep Other Personnel Clear
